Gold can be cheaper to buy in Dubai than in India, mainly because of differences in import duty, taxes and retailer charges. But the amount you save depends on what you buy and whether you take it back to India.
To compare gold prices properly, check the same weight and purity, convert both prices into one currency, and include all applicable charges. A lower shop price can become less attractive once customs duty and other costs are added.
Gold price in Dubai vs India: 22K and 24K comparison
Here is a snapshot of published morning gold rates on 22 October 2026.
Gold purity | Dubai price per gram | Dubai price converted to INR | India price per gram |
24K | AED 493.00 | ₹12,719.40 | ₹14,315.20 |
22K | AED 456.50 | ₹11,777.70 | ₹13,112.70 |
The Dubai figures are Dubai Jewellery Group rates published by Gulf News. The Indian figures are from the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA). These are published metal rates, rather than final shop invoices.
The conversion uses 1 AED = ₹25.80, rounded from the exchange rate quoted on 22 October 2026. Your bank or exchange provider may offer a different rate.
The Indian rates exclude 3% GST and making charges. Applicable VAT, retailer premiums and making charges also need to be considered when buying in Dubai. Prices can change throughout the day.
Why gold can be cheaper in Dubai
International gold prices influence both markets. What you pay also depends on the taxes and charges added locally.
Import duty
Dubai has no import duty on gold bullion. India increased its combined import duty on gold to 15% in May 2026, which affects the cost of imported gold and local pricing.
This duty is already reflected in the domestic gold market. You should not automatically add another 15% to an Indian retailer’s quoted price.
VAT and GST
In Dubai, gold jewellery generally attracts 5% VAT. Investment gold bars and coins that are at least 99% pure can qualify for 0% VAT.
In India, a finished jewellery purchase attracts 3% GST on the total transaction value, including making charges.
Making charges
When you buy jewellery, you also pay for its design and craftsmanship. These charges vary by retailer and piece, and may be negotiable.
Compare the full invoice. A lower gold rate does not guarantee a lower final price if making charges are higher.
How much could you save on 20 grams of gold?
Using the 24K rates above, here is an estimate for 20 grams of investment gold.
The Dubai calculation assumes the purchase qualifies for 0% VAT. Both calculations exclude any additional retailer premiums.
Calculation | Estimated amount |
Dubai: AED 493 × 20 grams | AED 9,860 |
Dubai amount converted into INR | ₹254,388 |
India: ₹14,315.20 × 20 grams | ₹286,304 |
India amount after adding 3% GST | ₹294,893 |
Difference before customs and other costs | ₹40,505 |
This calculation shows the difference using the published rates. Your actual saving will depend on the retailer’s final quote, currency conversion fees, any additional travel costs and applicable Indian customs duty.
If you plan to carry the gold into India, calculate those costs before buying.
How much gold can you bring from Dubai to India duty-free?
Under India’s Baggage Rules, 2026, eligible returning residents and tourists of Indian origin who have lived abroad for more than one year can bring in duty-free jewellery within these limits:
Female passengers: Up to 40 grams
Other passengers: Up to 20 grams
The previous rupee value caps have been removed. A short shopping trip to Dubai does not meet the requirement to have lived abroad for more than one year.
This allowance covers jewellery, rather than gold bars or coins. Separate import conditions and duty rules apply to those purchases, depending on passenger eligibility and the form of gold.
Check the current passenger customs rules and declaration requirements before travelling. The duty affecting India’s domestic gold prices should not be assumed to be the rate every passenger pays on arrival.
Jewellery or gold bars: which should you buy?
Your reason for buying matters.
If you want jewellery to wear, compare the gold weight, purity, making charges and any stones separately. Two pieces that look similar can contain different amounts of gold.
If your goal is investment, bars and coins make it easier to compare the value of the metal. However, retailer premiums and the price offered when you sell still affect your overall cost.
